When I flew across the planet five years ago to be the associate artistic director of a children’s dance school in Singapore, I didn't have a lot of experience teaching dance to children. I had a lot of experience teaching pre-teens, teens, and adults, and a ton of experience being a student and performing, but I did not have specialized training in teaching dance to little kids so I really had to think back to when I was a little one and remember what made ballet class such an incredible experience...
I was quite literally obsessed with my first ballet teacher, Miss Marlena. I remember her as being this big, tall woman...when in reality I think she was pretty petite. (it’s all relative, I guess :0) I was entranced by her, and in every class I would not utter even a single word because I was so in awe of her, and because I was so shy. However I loved my ballet class more than anything, and my favorite day of the entire week was Wednesday, ballet class day. I tried so hard, wanted to look my best and do my very best in every class.
Now when parents tell me that their daughter talks about “Miss Courtney” every day and constantly asks when it’s time for ballet class, it makes me smile and brings me right back to my days with Miss Marlena.
What is it that makes dancing so magical for youngsters?
I believe it’s the combination of imagination, expression of the spirit, freedom, discipline, beauty, and the striving for something greater.
I’d like to share with you a little taste of my Saturday morning dance class with this one-minute video of the dancing kiddos! It’s so freakin’ cute...I can guarantee it will add some lightness to your day!
